When your movie makes $326 million on a modest $17 million budget, there's a high probability a sequel is going to be heading to cinemas.

But it seems the announcement of a follow-up to hit horror A Quiet Place took writer/director John Krasinski by surprise, and he hasn't even decided yet whether or not he'll be involved.

"Paramount announced it pretty quickly," he told Digital Spy as he promoted Amazon Prime Video's Jack Ryan.

"You can't complain about that, it's pretty great that you make a movie that people want to make another one of. But I also commend them highly for allowing us to really take some time and think about it.

"I haven't really made a decision one way or the other."

One of the reasons he's taking so long to decide is that he needs to feel a deep connection to the sequel, in the same way he has about previous projects.

"It sounds nerdy but all the stuff I've done is very personally connected to me. I wrote the movie Promised Land for my dad, it was based on the version of America that he grew up in, and then The Hollars – even though I didn't write the script – the reason why I really wanted to direct that was it was kind of a love letter to my mom.

"Then A Quiet Place, even though it's insane to say when you look at the poster, is a love letter to my kids.

"So I've taken all these things extremely personally and if I can come up with a take on A Quiet Place 2 that connects to me in that way, I'd love to do it."

If you're as keen for Krasinski to get his thinking cap on as we are, you'll be cheered to learn that he might already have had the idea that draws him in to A Quiet Place 2.

"I will say last week I had an idea that I really liked, so now I gotta just see if it's good enough," he teased.

As those who have seen the first film will know – SPOILER WARNING – that Krasinski's character Lee Abbott sacrifices himself to save his children from the deadly creatures.

So his idea will have to be really good if he's going to be acting in the second film.

"Basically, I come back as a ghost," he said, jokingly. "That's the idea I had last week. It's really good, guys! Don't worry, it's not cheesy at all!"

He also revealed that his co-star (and real-life wife) Emily Blunt is the one who convinced him to direct A Quiet Place.

"I was gonna re-write it and act in it and she was like, 'No way, you gotta direct this, I've never seen you excited like this, you should direct it!' I feel like she should be my manager."

So come on Emily, work your magic again and let's get this sequel rolling!

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan launches on Amazon Prime Video on August 31.
