Julianne Hough Loves Sister-in-Law Hayley Erbert's Short Hair Post Brain Surgery: 'So French Chic' (Exclusive)

"I think she should keep it," the dancer told PEOPLE at the 2024 Tony Awards

Julianne Hough is a big fan of her sister-in-law Hayley Erbert's new hairstyle.

The 35-year-old dancer, actress and singer shared an update on Erbert, who is married to her brother Derek Hough, at the 2024 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 16. Julianne told PEOPLE that the dancer, who underwent an emergency craniectomy in December 2023, is doing "amazing" and that she loves her sister-in-law's post-surgery hairstyle.

"They're better than ever and I love that haircut and I think she should keep it," Julianne said. "We're in a huge fight because she wants to grow her hair out and I'm like, 'You have to keep it. You look so French chic.'"

The Dancing with the Stars alum added, "Not a real fight."

Julianne, who made her Broadway debut in the 2022 play POTUS, appeared on the 77th annual Tony Awards red carpet in a strapless blush-colored Ermanno Scervino gown with ruffle details. She accessorized with silver jewelry and her chin-length bob was curled under at the ends.

The star hosted the pre-show "The Tony Awards: Act One" alongside actor Utkarsh Ambudkar, and during the live telecast, introduced the cast of Illinoise for their performance of "The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is Out to Get Us."

In December 2023, Erbert and Derek, who were married that August, were on their Symphony of Dance tour in Washington D.C. when the So You Think You Can Dance alum experienced a medical emergency. After a performance, Erbert was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel. She underwent an emergency craniectomy and later had cranioplasty surgery to replace a large portion of her skull.

"With immense relief, gratitude and overwhelming joy I’d like to share that Hayley’s cranioplasty surgery has been successfully completed as planned," Derek, 38, shared on Instagram after his wife's surgeries were complete.

"My sincere appreciation goes to the exceptional medical team," he continued. "Their expertise and steady hands were pivotal in this journey, ensuring a smooth and successful surgery. Especially Dr. Mai who not only performed the surgery but was also the one who saved her life 2 weeks ago."

Erbert, who previously had long hair, had to shave her head for the brain surgeries. In the months since, she's worn a cropped hairstyle as her hair grows back.

In April 2024, the dancer made her first red carpet appearance since her surgery to celebrate the official launch of Hulu on Disney+. Earlier that day, she announced that she was cleared to rejoin Derek on tour. She returned to performances that month before wrapping up the tour in May 2024.
