Jury selected in trial of man accused in death of Moncton teen
A jury was selected Monday for the trial of a man accused of killing a Moncton teenager two years ago.
Riley Robert Sheldon Phillips, 20, is scheduled to stand trial in Moncton's Court of King's Bench on a charge of second-degree murder.
It's alleged he killed Joedin Lloyd Leger, 18, in Moncton on April 25, 2022.
Phillips pleaded not guilty to the charge at the outset of jury selection.
By late afternoon, 14 jurors and two alternates were selected. Before deliberations begin, the jury will be reduced to 12 members.
Justice Robert Dysart outlined a list of more than four dozen people who are connected to the case or may be called as witnesses during the trial. The judge said the trial should last about four weeks.
Dysart said the Crown alleges Leger's death happened in the context of a home invasion and robbery.
An opening statement from the prosecution is expected to take place Tuesday.
