Kharkiv resident found dead in Tysa River in illegal border crossing attempt

Romanian border guards discovered the body of a man in the Tysa River, believed to have attempted an illegal exit from Ukraine by swimming across, Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service reported on March 18.

The deceased was a 33-year-old resident of Kharkiv, according to the available information.

Border authorities emphasized the danger of attempting to swim across the Tysa River, citing its cold waters, swift current, and hazardous obstacles such as sharp stones, roots, and submerged tree remnants, despite a decrease in water levels.

Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, a total of 22 people have already died there trying to cross the border to illegally leave the country, said the Border Guard Service.
