  • Aussies embark on 'revenge travel' despite cost of living

Australians have defied the cost-of-living crisis and flocked to airports in the past 12 months for international travel at rates just shy of pre-pandemic levels.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows in the past year, 1,010,640 short and long-term trips were taken by Australian residents, just 38,000 trips shy of 2019.

An RMIT global financial markets, behaviour and trends expert thinks the numbers show Aussies are “revenge travelling”; hunting deals after the pandemic restrictions.

The ABS data, released on Friday, shows Australian short and long-term departure numbers are at 96 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

In the 12 months to July 2024, Australians left for more long-term overseas trips than in 2019 – up more than 15 per cent to 26,440.

  • RSPCA rescue cat after six-day operation

Talk about perseverance. Rescue teams from the RSPCA have spent six days trying to lure this cat out of a tiny gap between two commercial sheds in Adelaide.

Twelve-year-old Mishka ended up in the gap after fleeing construction noise at home and became stuck 15 metres inside. With the land owners rejecting proposals to rip up the sheds, it was a long wait for crews as they tried to entice the cat out with food and cat noises.

It eventually worked on day six and Mishka was surprisingly unharmed from the ordeal. Sadly with fears Mishka would flee again, her owners, who only recently adopted her, have been forced to give her up and she is now looking for a home.

  • Minister's Australia fear after Trump assassination attempt

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called the alleged assassination attempt on Donald Trump "a concern" as he addressed media this morning, with one of his cabinet ministers worried about the implications it could have for Australia.

"It worries me because America is such an important and powerful democracy, and it does affect us here in Australia," Clare O'Neil told the ABC on Monday.

"We're very lucky here and I never want Australians to lose sight of that."

Strict gun laws and a political culture, where differences are resolved at the ballot box rather than by violence, are key to Australia's stability, she argued.

"This is not the case in many countries in the world, and it's something precious and it's something we've got to value."
