Residents near the giant chemical fire in Melbourne's west could have an immediate impact from the smoke, experts have warned.

  • Brutal US heatwave sees temperatures 'hit 55C'

Over to the US now where parts of the country are enduring a brutal heatwave.

Las Vegas has just recorded five consecutive days over 46C, with forecasters saying it's the "most extreme" conditions the areas has faced, AP reported.

And over the border into California, Death Valley, notorious for its extreme heat, reached an astonishing 55C, according to unofficial temperature sensor.

Tourists flocked to the site this week to get a picture with the famous big thermometer.

“It like a wave that hits when you get out of the car, but it’s a very dry heat. So it’s not as in Europe,' one tourist told AP.

  • George Clooney's brutal Joe Biden call

For those who are more familiar with US celebrities than the country's lawmakers, the words of one Hollywood star might have a bit more weight to it than the handful of Democrats calling for US President Joe Biden to step aside ahead of the nation's election.

George Clooney was with Biden just last month and has now given a damning assessment of his mental sharpness.

"It's devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe "big F-ing deal" Biden of 2010," he said in an opinion piece for the New York Times.

"He wasn't even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate."

While praising Biden for his achievements throughout his political career, he said he feared the Democrats would not win the election if he was at the helm.

It's a brutal blow for Biden, 81, with Clooney a lifelong Democrat and one of the party's biggest fundraisers.

Biden's disastrous performance at the presidential debate has raised serious questions about how fit he is for a second term, however he has remained defiant, insisting he is the right man to take on Donald Trump.

A father who allegedly stopped his family being rescued from their burning home has been charged with murdering three of his children.

The 28-year-old is due to face a bedside court hearing on Thursday after initially being left in a coma following the blaze at his home at Lalor Park, in Sydney's west.

Three of his children, aged six, two and five months, died in the fire on Sunday, while three others were hospitalised.

The man has been charged with three counts of domestic violence-related murder and a further five counts of attempted murder.

Homicide detectives allege he tried to stop people entering the burning home to rescue the children after starting the fire.

The man is due to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Thursday from his bed at Westmead Hospital.

  • Missed chance for Alex de Minaur

Australians were devastated to learn of Alex de Minaur's withdrawal from Wimbledon due to injury, but no one will be more frustrated than the man himself.

Former Aussie star Pat Cash says the injury will be even more disappointing due to the doubts about his Quarter-final opponent's own fitness.

"Obviously, he was playing Novak Djokovic, but there is a question about Djokovic's fitness, so you think this is possibly the best opportunity Alex would have to go further … you could see how devastated he was,' Cash told the BBC.
