Man buys home knowing it will fall into the ocean

Coastal erosion is a big fear for many homeowners along Australia's vast coastline.

“Life’s too short, and I just said to myself, ‘Let’s just see what happens,” he told Bloomberg.

“It’s going to eventually fall into the ocean, and it may or may not be in my lifetime.”

Now that's a glass half full kind of bloke.

  • New housing solution proposed to Aussie boomers

Retired Australians staying put in their family homes has riled some amid a housing crisis, and experts are now suggesting if they won't sell up to make room for young families needing the space, they should help out in a different way.

QUT's Dr Lyndall Bryant says one solution is for older homeowners to rent out their spare bedrooms.

“If we can incentivise older Australians to rent out a spare bedroom, it serves the dial purpose of improving access to affordable housing and cost of living relief to vulnerable older Australians," she said.

She pointed to the 2021 census, which she says showed there are 13 million unused bedrooms within the existing Australian housing stock.
