Premier defends 11-minute private jet journey

Queensland Premier Steven Miles has defended taking an 11-minute flight on a private government jet.

Miles made the 74km trip from Hervey Bay to Bundaberg by plane on Monday, sparking considerable backlash.

But Miles has defended the move when questioned by reporters this morning, saying it was "one leg of a multi-city trip".

"I think you’ll see that I was very busy and it was an entirely appropriate use of travel resources."

Miles suggested hiring a car would have been more expensive than taking the private jet.

Labor's Miles is campaigning to remain the state's premier with Queenslanders heading to the polls on October 26.

  • Iran takes aim at Australia over social media post

Australia has defended the right to back its values overseas after Iran reportedly summoned its ambassador in Tehran over a social media post it deemed "promoted homosexuality".

The Australian Embassy in Tehran made an Instagram post celebrating "Wear it Purple Day" to create a "supportive environment where everyone, especially LGBTQIA+ youth, can feel proud to be themselves".

The photo shows embassy staff wearing purple and holding a plate of purple cupcakes.

"Let's keep championing diversity and inclusion for a brighter, more inclusive future," an English translation of the post reads.

The post "promoted homosexuality," according to Iranian state media.

Asked about Iran's response, Workplace Relations Minister Murray Watt said the government supported all Australians, regardless of their race or sexual orientation and said he was "concerned" over Iran's position.

  • Iconic Aussie flower under threat

It's such an iconic flower but it's now under threat.

The Gibraltar Range waratah has been listed as endangered. Illegal poaching of the popular flowers, as well as changing weather patterns and fire have been linked to its demise.

It’s believed fewer than 2500 mature adult plants are left in the wild. The Gibraltar Range waratah (Telopea aspera) is similar in appearance to the NSW floral emblem the Waratah (Telopea speciosissima) although it has been harder to cultivate. It is a woody shrub that grows to three metres and has limited distribution, mostly around the New England region of NSW.

Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said it was "hard to imagine that the Gibraltar Range waratah – a symbol of our nation – is under threat in Australia".

  • Liam Gallagher's 'hypocritical' tweet after $690 saga

Ah yes, another old tweet that hasn't aged very well.

In 2017, Liam Gallagher took aim at his brother's ticket pricing in the US where he was reportedly charging fans US$350 to see him play. And now fans have been quick to dig up the tweet after thousands raged over the in demand pricing tactic that saw some Oasis tickets soar to £355 ($690) on Ticketmaster over the weekend.

Many were quick to point out the "hypocrisy" Liam. But judging by his care-free attitude on X (formerly Twitter), he won't be that fussed by the backlash.

  • Mum's tragic reveal after baby dies at Brisbane daycare

The mother of a baby who died at a Brisbane daycare on Monday was unable to hold her only child after she rushed to the centre.

“When I arrived, the police already arrived before me, so they didn’t allow me to touch my baby, didn’t allow me to kiss my baby, didn’t allow me to give him a cuddle," the mother told the Courier Mail.

The boy's father was able to make it to the scene in Wakerley quickly after receiving a message from the centre. But paramedics were unable to resuscitate him, before the father was allowed to give him a "tight cuddle".

The mother revealed the boy's grandmother is battling cancer and has yet to tell her of her grandson's death over fears it will worsen her condition.

Investigations into the death are ongoing.
