Locals stunned by driver's 'absolutely amazing' act on Aussie road
The incredible display is apparently not uncommon in Melbourne, with locals quickly identifying the blue macaw as 'Bosco' – a local celebrity.
Most of the time when a motorist's actions catches the eye of onlookers, it's for their questionable driving skills — a scenario Australians say is common on our roads. But every now and again, if you're lucky, something special will unravel right in front of your eyes when you're least expecting it.
Such was the case in Melbourne this week, where a group of stunned inner-west locals were treated to an incredible sight.
Posting from Footscray, about five kilometres from the CBD, one local captured the moment a man pulled up at a set of traffic lights, called into the sky and blew his whistle, and watched as his beautiful blue macaw flew right back in a matter of seconds.
The "amazing" display is apparently not uncommon in the city, with locals quickly identifying the blue bird as "Bosco", a well-known local in the area. Melburnians say Bosco, and his companion Coco — who is red — often brighten the days of residents, and even have a dedicated social media presence.
Local celebrities put on a show for excited Melburnians
As one person put it "they’re local celebrities — they free fly during the day and [their owner] calls them home in the afternoon". In the footage, the bird's owner can be seen calling its name while looking into the sky, much to the surprise of those watching from the footpath.
Then, he pulls out a whistle and gives it a sharp blow. Within seconds the striking blue and yellow bird soars down from above and gently lands on the roof of his companion's car. "What the f***k, holy s***t," the person videoing the incredible sight says, as others audibly cheer and chant nearby.
The animal then makes its way comfortably back into the car, onto the arm of its owner, as the duo drive off. Responding to the footage, people spoke of their fond interactions with Bosco. "We had both his birds in our backyard in Footscray one afternoon. One of them told us to F-off," one person said.
"BOSCO AND COCO! I love them," said a second.
"Oh — I've seen this bloke! I actually thought I'd just had far too much to drink and was seeing things! Thank God I now know I wasn't hallucinating," said another.
"Absolutely amazing, funny part is you guys thought he was just calling out to nothing," wrote another.
