A key commuter railway line in south-east London has reopened after a person was hit by a train.

The incident happened on Monday morning between Elmers End and Hayes, resulting in all lines being closed.

Trains were unable to run between Lewisham and Hayes and may be diverted to Orpington.National Rail said disruption to Southeastern services was expected to last at least until 1pm.

Meanwhile the London Overground was experiencing severe delays between Stratford and Richmond/Clapham Junction due to an earlier defective train at Canonbury.

Airports cancel flights amid poor weather

Away from train disruption, flights to and from Gatwick and Heathrow airports have been disrupted on Monday amid air traffic control staff shortages and bad weather.

Monday’s disruption came after dozens of flights were cancelled over the weekend due to staffing issues at air traffic control (ATC) provider Nats.

A total of 11 outbound flights that were due to leave Gatwick on Monday were cancelled, while further inbound flights are also understood to have been grounded, said the airport.

Easyjet was said to be the worst-affected airline, with flights from Gatwick to Naples, Montpellier, Jersey, and Edinburgh among those cancelled on Monday.

BA flights to Amsterdam, Glasgow, Las Vegas, Ibiza, and Nice were also cancelled, according to Gatwick’s website.

Both airlines have apologised to passengers for the disruption.

Passengers hoping to get to Gatwick Airport on Monday afternoon are being warned of severe disruption due to a points failure.

The fault between Gatwick Airport and Three Bridges means some lines are blocked, with no trains able to run between Horsham and Three Bridges.

As a result, trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised. This is expected until 3pm, said Network Rail.

Affected companies include Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink.

Thameslink services near Luton stopped due to 'police incident'

Commuter Thameslink services near Luton are disrupted due to a “police incident”.

The train company said it was unable to run services between St Neots and Hitchin, with trains stopped in both directions as officers respond.

Southern and Thameslink hit by delays

Passengers on commuter services run by Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express may experience delays due to a speed restriction.

The restriction over a defective track at Burgess Hill means trains have to run at a reduced speed on the line towards London.

As a result, trains may be delayed by up to 20 minutes. This is expected until 12noon.
