A look at the United States by burglaries

New Mexico is the most burgled U.S. state, according to a new study by lighting and furniture firm Elite Fixtures.

And while burglary rates have been dropping for the past two decades — the national rate of property crime in the U.S. fell by 48% between 1993 and 2016  — Americans believe that the number is actually up.

Using data from the F.B.I. and Google Trends search data from 2016, Elite Fixtures revealed the states that had the most number of burglaries.

The company also looked at the least-burgled states — with New York taking the top spot.

“One interesting trend that we found is that the South has more burglaries per capita than any region in the U.S.,” Elite Fixtures told Yahoo Finance. “The Northeast, on the other hand, has the lowest rate.”

Daytime burglaries more common

The company also looked at what time of the day most burglaries occur.

“When comparing daytime burglaries to nighttime, it was surprising to see how many more happened in the daytime,” the company said. “[But] after some thought, it does make sense since houses are often empty during working hours, but seeing the actual numbers was eye-opening.”

The most common timeframe was between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. since that’s when most of the occupants aren’t around. The average amount stolen in the day was found to be around $2,250.
