From Digital Spy

Lucifer really is a show like no other. It's part police procedural, part romance, part fantasy adventure, part epic, and it's fronted by THE DEVIL (aka Lucifer, aka Tom Ellis).

Based on Neil Gaiman's comic book series of the same name (put out by DC's vertigo, which technically means Lucifer is part of the same stable as Arrow, The Flash, Gotham and Supergirl), it's a fun show that seems to get better as it goes along.

It hasn't lit up Tumblr like some other DC shows, but with some unusual experimentation ahead for season 3, that could be about to change.

And it actually already has better viewing figures than Supergirl, and even Gotham (which was its lead-in show, until this year – more information on that below).

What follows is everything you need to know ahead of Lucifer season 3's broadcast later in 2017.

Lucifer season 3 episodes: What can we expect?

Episode 1 of Lucifer will be a little bit different to your usual season premiere. Brace yourselves, this is more complicated than a deal with the devil.

Lucifer Season 2 had an 18-episode arc carefully planned out, but then Fox surprised showrunner Joe Henderson with an offer of an extra four episodes.

Those episodes were initially incorporated into season 2, with a 22-episode run announced to fans. But then Henderson decided those extra four episodes would be best served as special 'one-offs' and placed them at the start of season 3.

So, Lucifer season 3's episode 1 will actually be episode 19 of season 2, which is actually the first part of a four-part miniseries. Simple! You can read more about the change of plan here.

But season 3 will be different in another way – the show, which is set in LA, is moving from its current shooting location in Vancouver to actual LA. We'd say it was a creative decision, if it wasn't for the fact Lucifer will be able to take advantage of new LA-based tax breaks.

Still, it'll add another layer of realism to the fantasy police procedural comedy-drama television series featuring the Devil as a lead character.

Here's a synopsis for the season 3 premiere, though it gives away very little: "Lucifer returns to San Diego to heat things up. The climactic events of the season finale left us wondering, where in the world is Lucifer and how did he get his wings back?"

It's official: the series will return Monday, October 2 at 8/7c on Fox.

Very excitingly, Lucifer will operate as a lead-in to Marvel's first live action X-Men show The Gifted, kicking off at 9/8c, which means Monday nights will be very special for comic fans in the States in September.

But what about the UK fans? Glad you asked!

Lucifer season 3 UK / Amazon

Season 1 hit Amazon in January 2016, to prepare fans for season 2 – which was split into three broadcast sections beginning September 20, 2016, with Season 2B airing January 17, 2017 and Season 2C landing on May 2, 2017.

We imagine it'll be a similar set-up for season 3, unless, like Gaiman's other Amazon show American Gods, it's broadcast in sync with the US airing. We hope so. We also hope Amazon gets The Gifted, so we can recreate that US broadcast double-bill.

UPDATE: While you wait for season three to hit Amazon, you can watch the first couple of seasons on 'proper' telly - it's airing on Fox UK!

Lucifer season 3 trailer

He's baaa-aack. The Lucifer panel at Comic-Con in July 2017 gave us our first taste of the DC show's latest season, and it's shaping up to be as devilishly brilliant as ever.

Alongside showcasing Tom Ellis' main character in a pretty fetching, '70s-style suit as he carries on getting up to no good, the panel also confirmed that Smallville star Tom Welling will be heading to the show to give Lucifer some trouble.

It's the first proper trailer we've seen since the show's last teaser trailer, which was very exciting (even if it does just mainly tell everyone about the new time slot).

We can expect longer trailers to keep on coming though, especially as they've got a fairly complicated set-up / structure to explain, in terms of those opening one-off episodes that'll lead into the proper season.

So far, the only spoilers to leak out are related to those opening episodes, and they all sound pretty strange.

One of the episodes is modelled after The Twilight Zone and apparently feels like a super-dark play.

Another has a far lighter tone, and is rumoured to play like a romp. One might be a musical.

One thing we do know for sure – Lauren Holly is going to appear in at least one episode as new character Roxie.

Holly will appear in one of the one-off episodes, and her storyline involves a Las Vegas casino (could that be the 'romp' episode? Ocean's 11 featuring Satan, anyone?).

From everything we've heard so far, Lucifer season 3 is going to be a bit of a departure for the series, with lots of changes / new directions.

If you want to join in on the fun, you can catch up on the first two series on Amazon Prime right now, then keep coming back to this article for all the latest information.
