A police officer is in hospital and several motorists have been injured during a fracas when the senior constable tried to arrest a man on the Gold Coast.
A man, driving a ute at high speeds on the Pacific Motorway at Robina on Friday night, collided with two other vehicles at a roadworks before striking a barrier and coming to a stop. He left the ute and tried to push a woman off her motorcycle that had stopped.
A 47-year-old female senior constable from the Forensic Crash Unit who was travelling on the motorway stopped and confronted the man. They became involved in a struggle and the man then allegedly assaulted the constable. Four members of the public came to her aid and held the man down until more police arrived and took him into custody.
The senior constable was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injures while the man was taken for treatment of a cut to his head and his shoulder. Several other motorists were treated at the scene and taken to hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries.
Police want to speak to the woman whose motorbike, believed to be sports bike, the man tried to steal. They are also appealing for witness and dash cam footage of the area.
A 44-year-old man is currently assisting police with their inquiries.
