Man walking along street killed by falling piece of fire escape

A man has been killed after he was hit by a piece of fire escape that dropped from the side of a building.

Police said 58-year-old Richard Marchhart died from a skull fracture he sustained when he was hit by the debris.

Mr Marchart was walking on Broadway in Manhattan's SoHo neighbourhood on Friday when the metal object landed on him.

The 68kg metal step fell seven storeys, New York Daily News reports.

Nathalia Medllin, 24, was also hit by the debris. She was hospitalised in stable condition.

Witnesses said the pair were walking separately when the debris fell leaving them both bleeding and unconscious.

Officials said a worker was inspecting the fire escape seven storeys up when a piece of it broke off and fell.

Police and New York City's Buildings Department are investigating.
