Margaret McCarron: Family of woman fatally struck by police van in Scotland launch legal action against force

The family of a woman who was knocked down and killed by a marked police van has launched legal action against Police Scotland.

Margaret McCarron was fatally injured after being hit in Motherwell's Merry Street on 19 September 2021.

The 58-year-old, from the North Lanarkshire town, was taken to University Hospital Wishaw but was pronounced dead a short time later.

An officer was charged last year in connection with the incident and remains on restricted duties as the criminal case continues.

Ms McCarron's family has now raised a civil action against Police Scotland at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

In a statement released via lawyers Digby Brown, the family said: "Every day we have mourned the loss of our mum however we continue to try and keep her memory alive by living with the kindness, warmth and positivity she shared with those around her.

"There have been aspects of the incident which, for us, remain unclear so we hope a civil action will help deliver answers so we may finally be able to process everything, heal and move forwards."

Police Scotland said it would be "inappropriate to comment" on an ongoing legal case.
