Great news for fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise; there's a new film in the works... sort of.

A standalone version of the popular films is in the works, and it will star Margot Robbie, who's teaming up with her Birds of Prey screenwriter, Christina Hodson.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "the project, in early development, is not intended to be a spinoff of the long-running franchise that had pirate Jack Sparrow at its centre, but rather a wholly original story with new characters under the Pirates moniker, itself inspired by the long-running attraction at Disneyland."

The Pirates franchise grossed over $4.5 billion across its five feature films, including sequels 2006’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, 2007's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, 2011's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. So we're pretty sure this one will be another hit, even without Jack Sparrow.

The film hasn't begun shooting yet, but is thought to be a new original story bringing fresh characters to the franchise. As for the release date, that's still unknown too - but it's nice to have something to look forward to!
