Masked Singer star reacts to surprising TV moment: 'I felt crushed'

For the first time on this year’s season of The Masked Singer Australia, one of the guessing panellists managed to successfully work out which celebrity was behind the mask.

While Mel B thought Tiger was soccer star Paul Gascoigne, Dave Hughes guessed actor Gary Sweet and Abbie Chatfield was convinced it was comedian Ronny Chieng, Chrissie Swan was spot on with her guess of Jamie Durie.

Chatting with Yahoo Lifestyle following his elimination on Sunday night, the TV host and legendary horticulturalist admits he was shocked when Chrissie correctly guessed him after his very first performance last week.

“I felt crushed actually, because I was like, oh my god, all these people have worked so hard to keep this a secret and Chrissie’s just knocked it out of the water in one clean sweep,” he shares.

“But it doesn't really matter. It all depends on how far you stay in the show and I was really lucky that I was able to stay that long to be honest, because those other guys were definitely professional singers.

“When you put a Grammy Award winning singer up against a glorified gardener, it’s incredible that I made it that far.”

Jamie went on to say that it might have been his body language that gave him away, and his clue package was “probably too good”.

“There were too many clues,” he continues.

“There aren’t too many people here on Australian TV that have had the journey I've had, so when you start using the word ‘Man’ and then moving into entertainment, you kind of put two and two together.”

‘It’s where TV needs to go’

Jamie, who has starred on a number of Australian TV shows throughout his career including The Block, House Rules and The Living Room, says he was keen to join The Masked Singer to experience something completely different.

“I’ve always been a performer at heart, that’s kind of where I started in my career,” he explains.

“I guess this was something new that I'd never tried before and I thought, ‘Why not? Let's give it a go’. My partner's a professional singer and I have a whole new respect for the art of singing now, I can tell you that.

“I just think the whole chemistry of the show was brilliant. To be honest, it's refreshing not to be on a TV show that tests the human spirit, that degrades people, that puts people in awkward positions. This is just a great, fun family show. It’s really good viewing, it’s great variety TV and it's where TV needs to go, I think.”

While he’s made plenty of reality TV appearances as both a host and a contestant, including his brief stint on Dancing With The Stars, Jamie admits The Masked Singer might be his last competition show for the near future.

“I'm up to my eyeballs in changing nappies and shooting a new green show for another network, which is really fun,” he says.

“It’s all about gardens, sustainability and treading a little lighter on the planet whilst living in sustained green luxury, and it’ll be out middle of next year. So I'm going to focus on those two things right now and hopefully, viewers like it enough to keep it rolling.”

The Masked Singer continues tonight at 7:30pm on Ten.
