Netflix's lavish Royal drama The Crown is undergoing a complete cast overhaul in its third season, as the story of the Queen jumps forward.

Every single cast member is being replaced, with Matthew Goode – who played Princess Margaret's lover Antony Armstrong-Jones – telling Digital Spy that he was sad not to stick around for longer.

"It wasn't that we walked away from it, we were told we were going to be replaced, which is a slightly different feeling," Goode said. "I think we could've probably done one more [season, with the old cast]."

He added: "It's a big change for them, for every single character to be different. It asks a lot of the audience, so I hope it works out. But Peter [Morgan]'s writing is so strong, and they've got a lot of money so it always looks brilliant...

"And they've got directors like Ben Caron... I don't think [executive producer / director] Stephen [Daldry]'s actually involved this year, but Ben Caron is a sensational talent."

Though he has mixed feelings about leaving the series behind, Goode insisted that he's excited to see what his "terrific" replacement, Ben Daniels, will do with the part.

"I saw a photograph the other day, sent to me by a very good friend, saying, 'He looks very good straight away, doesn't he?' – it was Ben posed with the camera in front of his face, and I was like, 'Oh my God, he looks better than I did!'

"I'm sure he's gonna be brilliant... I remember speaking to Peter, who was incredibly excited, saying, 'Oh my God, I've just written the most outrageous scene between Princess Margaret and Antony, where they're having a huge row!' and I'm like, 'Well, I'm thrilled for the person who's taking over!'

"It sounded like it was amazing and would be really fun to play. We [Goode and Princess Margaret actress Vanessa Kirby] didn't really have any of those blinding arguments... and they're a lot of fun to do!"

Goode is currently nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series at this year's Emmys, taking place on Monday, September 17.

Matthew Goode stars in A Discovery of Witches beginning tonight at 9pm on Sky One and also available to watch on NOW TV.
