McCarthy elected House speaker, 118th Congress sworn in
Shortly after midnight on Saturday morning, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif, clinched the votes needed and was elected speaker of the House of Representatives. McCarthy's victory followed a late-night deal with Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla.

- The total number of votes cast is 428, of which the honorable Kevin McCarthy of the state of California has received 216. Therefore, the honorable Kevin McCarthy of the state of California, having received a majority of the votes cast, is duly elected Speaker of the House of Representatives.
- Now will the Speaker designate raise his right hand.
Do you solemnly swear that you will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that you will bear true faith and allegiance to the same, that you take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and that you will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which you're about to enter, so help you God?
