Meghan will need to curtsey to Kate, but not every royal

One thing that everyone knows about the royal family is that it’s highly hierarchical.

But the order of succession to the throne – which currently sees Prince Harry sit at fifth in line - isn’t the only royal ranking that Meghan Markle will now have to learn.

Curtseying is an important sign of respect in The Firm, and the order of who is required to curtsey to whom can be very confusing.

Firstly, only women curtsey (while the men bow) and your rank changes depending on whether you’re a full-blood royal or born a commoner.

If you weren’t born into the family, you adopt your husband’s rank when he’s present, but you sink down a few rungs if you’re on your own.

So, according to royal expert Christopher Wilson, Meghan will have to curtsey to Harry’s cousins Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice if she’s on her own. However, if Harry is by her side, Eugenie and Beatrice will curtsey to her.

Meghan will also have to bend her knees and bow her head to her sister-in-law Kate Middleton, and Camilla Parker-Bowles, as they are both future queens.

The same is always extended to the Queen, Charles and William, as true-blooded royals. As the Sovereign’s daughter, Princesses Anne will also need to be curtseyed to, but not her daughter Zara Phillips.
