Meghan Markle gave Kate Middleton a sweet gift when they first met

From Cosmopolitan

It'd be fair to say that Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton's friendship has long been subject to speculation. To be honest, some of the rumours make our eyes roll a tad (e.g. those stories about an alleged feud between the pair), but we can see why so many are curious about what the women are like behind the scenes and away from the public eye.

Now, a new royal biography, Finding Freedom, has lifted the lid somewhat on their relationship, describing what went down when Meghan was introduced to her future sister-in-law for the very first time – and actually, it all sounds rather lovely. However, it's worth noting that the book hasn't been authorised by the royal family themselves.

Explaining that Kate is an "extremely guarded" person, a source apparently told authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand that Meghan first met The Duchess of Cambridge on 10 January 2017, shortly after she and Prince Harry had returned from a ski trip and they popped over to his brother and sister-in-law's home, Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace.

Writing about the day, Scobie and Durand say, "Meghan brought a present for The Duchess, who had celebrated her birthday just a day earlier. The soft leather Smythson notebook helped to break the ice, as did Meghan's cooing over then twenty-month old Charlotte [Kate and Prince William's daughter]." How thoughtful of Meghan!

The authors continue on to say, "The meeting ended with Kate letting Meghan know that she was always welcome to contact her if she needed anything. Having been through the experience of being a royal girlfriend herself, Kate knew how trying it could be to suddenly have one's personal life laid bare."

Naturally, the pair won't be seeing one another as often these days, given that Meghan and Harry have upped sticks and moved to Montecito, just outside of LA, in a bid to have more privacy. The couple recently announced that they've signed a new deal with Netflix, for a pretty penny, meaning they've been able to pay back all the money owed for the renovations to their UK base, Frogmore Cottage, too.

Meanwhile, Kate Middleton has also been keeping busy with her nationwide photography competition. The final 100 images have now all been selected and are available to view in a digital gallery – something that has received high praise indeed from none other than The Queen herself.
