As they continue to figure out their new roles as non-working members of the royal family, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry (who recently said he would've visited the UK had it not been for COVID-19) have kept up with their volunteering work over in California. The couple recently moved into a new home in Montecito, an hour and a half or so outside of LA, but they both regularly return to the City of Angels for work.

They even took time to meet with members of the local community on 31 August, which marked the 23rd anniversary of Princess Diana's tragic and untimely passing, by visiting the Assistance League of LA's Preschool Learning Center. While there, both Meghan and Harry got stuck in with helping the children to tend to the garden at the centre.

Sharing the experience on Instagram, the Assistance League of LA wrote, "The children of our Preschool Learning Center got a wonderful surprise when The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited yesterday! In addition to helping the children replant the Preschool Learning Center's garden, they spent time with them, sharing their appreciation for nature and helping to instil the importance of healthy eating. We truly appreciate their time and care for our students."

While there, Meghan also paid a sweet tribute to her mother-in-law by planting some forget-me-nots – known to be Diana's favourite flower. The bloom even featured in Meghan's wedding bouquet for the same reason.

The Assistance League of LA said of the gesture, "Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are helping keep Princess Diana’s memory alive, even from their new home state of California. This week the couple spent the morning reading and gardening alongside young students at Preschool Learning Center in Los Angeles. They even planted Princess Diana’s favorite flowers, forget-me-nots, in the garden."

As for the wedding day bouquet, a statement released by Kensington Palace at the time explained it was important for the Sussexes to recognise Diana in this way: "Prince Harry handpicked several flowers yesterday from their private garden at Kensington Palace to add to the bespoke bridal bouquet designed by florist Philippa Craddock. The spring blooms include Forget-Me-Nots which were Diana, Princess of Wales’ favourite flower. The couple specifically chose them to be included in Ms. Markle’s bouquet to honour the memory of the late Princess on this day."

We think it's a wonderful way to pay homage to a special mother, who is clearly still much missed.
