The Duke and Duchess of Sussex may not have undertaken a public engagement in quite some time, but when it came to dressing for their tour of New York City, Meghan knew exactly what to wear. The royal stuck to her tried-and-tested style formula.

Meghan and Harry were photographed this afternoon meeting with Mayor Bill de Blasio and his family, and visiting the 9/11 memorial.

For the occasion, the duchess reverted to some of her favourite wardrobe heroes – a wool coat, a turtle-neck knit, wide-legged trousers and heeled pumps. We've seen her wear almost this exact ensemble before. In fact, she's turned to it so many times, you could even call it her uniform.

Time and time again, the duchess has reverted to wide-legged trousers and classic outerwear, whether for a royal tour or an appearance at an award show. In fact, throughout her career, from her early days promoting Suits to her work as a full-time royal, she has turned to timeless tailoring over and over again, making certain pieces her go-tos – and this has a lot to do with why she always looks so stylish.

She is a great example of finding out what works for you – your lifestyle, your body shape, your personal style – and sticking to it.

And, it has never been more important to embrace your signature style than right now. As we all try to consume less, shopping fashion has to be about making sensible decisions, investing in pieces that we love and will be able to wear forever, rather than tapping into passing trends.

So, if you want to follow in Meghan's footsteps by embracing your personal style and finding your very own uniform, then look at what has worked for you in the past, the pieces that made you feel your best, and break down how you can incorporate these elements into everything you wear going forward.

“Think back to outfits you have had where you felt your most beautiful,” Sidonie Jago, head of private shopping at Harvey Nichols told us. “Likely, these outfits were the best cut, colour and style on you and should be recreated. The most stylish people I know have a few key styles that they look best in, and they repeat versions of the same outfits.”
