Mel Gibson Floats Fire Theory Even He Admits Is ‘Insane’
Mel Gibson is not one to let a crisis go by without a conspiracy theory—even if he has to reach for an explanation that is “insane”—even by his own standards.
Speaking on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle on Friday night, the controversial actor told the show’s host there were any number of unanswered questions about the “convenient” circumstances surrounding the inferno in the Los Angeles area, wondering aloud whether the fires had been “commissioned” as part of a nefarious effort to move tenants off otherwise valuable land and property.
Gibson’s comments have put him up alongside a growing host of right-wing pundits and influencers who’ve been spreading false claims about the wildfires online since they first broke out on Tuesday—including Elon Musk, who’s somehow managed to turn the tragic loss of life into a “DEI” issue.
As Gibson put it on Friday night, “I know they were messing with the water, letting reserves go for one reason or another. California has a lot of problems that sort of, baffle the mind as to why they do things. And then in events like this you sort of look… well, is it on purpose?”
Unlike his fellow members of the tinfoil hat brigade, however, Gibson did at least concede how unhinged his ramblings about a possible conspiracy behind the fires might sound to a rational human being.
He told Ingraham, “It’s an insane thing to think, but one begins to ponder whether or not there is a purpose in mind. What could it be, you know? Do they want the state empty? I dunno.”
The show’s host then swung right in with a massively unfounded conjecture of her own. “Well Mel, there’s already talk, and we played a couple of soundbites, of reimagining the way rebuilding occurs, and obviously there’s a great need for high density housing,” Ingraham said.
She then went on, “You’re already hearing rumblings of that in this case. Like, goodbye single family homes, hello high density housing.”
Gibson seemed to be in agreement, chiming in afterwards, “Yeah, it’s pretty scary. And it’ll take decades to do, too.”
