Michael Maguire and wife's 'secret' multimillion-dollar move comes to light amid Broncos role

The new coach's appointment has proven divisive in Brisbane and Queensland on the whole.

Michael Maguire's appointment as Brisbane Broncos coach has proven divisive in Queensland due to the fact he's from NSW, but it turns out the coach has been making moves in the sunshine state for years. New details have emerged of the 'secret' property portfolio he's amassed with Joelle in Queensland, which is said to be worth millions.

According to the Courier Mail, Maguire and his wife own properties in Bracken Ridge, Everton Park, Durack and Maroochy River, which they bought between 2018 and 2021. Maguire was coaching the Wests Tigers and New Zealand Kiwis throughout that period, and would have had no idea he'd go on to become the Broncos coach.

According to the latest data, Maguire has made millions off his Queensland properties, with the home in Everton Park rising in value by nearly $400,000 in the last six years. But whether or not it's enough of a connection to appease diehard Queenslanders remains to be seen.

Maguire's appointment has divided opinion in the sunshine state, simply because he led NSW to glory over the Maroons in this year's State of Origin series. Queensland and Brisbane legends Shane Webcke and Gorden Tallis have both expressed their reservations over Maguire's appointment, and many have said they wanted a Queenslander to take the role instead.

But Corey Parker has labelled that suggestion "rubbish", stating Maguire is the best man for the job. “There’s been some ex-players that have said you can’t have a NSW coach coaching the Broncos, but a number of years ago, they were headhunting Craig Bellamy, and he’s done both," Parker said on SEN radio.

Webcke had previously said: “Mate, he coaches NSW. Spare me that. I’ve got nothing against him, but did we get rid of Kevvie Walters for that? I don’t think so.”

A fan poll conducted by Yahoo Sport Australia epitomises how divisive Maguire's appointment has been, with a near 50/50 split from over 13,000 votes about whether or not the new coach will be successful. Maguire can make the noise go away if he manages to turn the Broncos around after a woeful season, and he has big plans.

"I'm extremely hungry to win another competition (after 2014 with the Rabbitohs)," he said last week. "I just see the opportunities and the ability of what a club like the Broncos can be - (and) you can get pretty close to it."

The new coach risks getting more noses out of joint if he makes too many changes at the Broncos, and it would take a brave man to punt some of the club legends still working there. Allan Langer has been working as a trainer and assistant coach for a number of years, and is extremely close to sacked coach Kevin Walters.

Maguire would be well within his rights to move Langer on and start afresh, although Langer is said to be considering where his future lies anyway. The latest reports state the Broncos are considering moving Langer into a corporate role to work with the club's sponsors, which he is open to after Walters was retained as a club ambassador as well.

“I’ve got to talk to Alf (Langer),” Maguire said last week. “I’d really like Alf (to stay). I’ve had a fair bit of time with Alf, and I think we all like Alf. So I want to see what he wants to do with himself and work out where he fits in. I’ll definitely have those conversations with Alf for sure.”

Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy said: “We will always value what Alfie has done for the Broncos and we want to keep him here for life. Hopefully he feels the same way.”
