Mayor Crystal Meloche announced that Michael Pearce will become LaSalle's new police chief on July 29 following Chief Duncan Davies' retirement.

Meloche made the announcement on Friday on behalf of the LaSalle Police Services Board. She says Pearce's appointment comes after a nationwide search to replace the outgoing police chief.

The mayor said Pearce's "vision for enhancing public safety, strengthening community relations, and implementing innovative strategies to address the evolving challenges facing law enforcement," impressed the selection committee and played a role in their decision.

Pearce will be leaving his current post as Chatham-Kent's inspector in charge of the Community Patrol Branch.  A communications representative for the Chatham-Kent police says Pearce's departure is a tremendous loss for the organization but that its members extend their "warmest congratulations and best wishes," to Pearce.

Pearce brings more than two decades of policing experience to his role in LaSalle. He also previously served in the York Regional Police. He's also worked in patrol, a community-oriented response unit, drugs and vice, media relations, professional standards, training and career development and recruiting.

Pearce said he's "thrilled" to work with the town's teams of professionals and feels "profound appreciation and humility" ahead of starting his new position.

"Together, we will advance member development and wellness, community inclusion, and technological innovation."

He also thanked the LaSalle Police Services Board for placing their trust in him.

Meloche says she's confident in Pearce's ability to excel in the role  and says she looks forward to working closely with him "to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents of the Town of LaSalle."

A Change of Command Ceremony for current chief, Davies, will be held later this year but the details haven't been released.
