Michelle Obama, Sophie Turner, and Rihanna All Wear This Brand During Their Biggest Moments
What do you wear when you’re in the White House getting ready to film a Christmas special, releasing a song snubbing Justin Bieber, or celebrating the anniversary of your record-breaking beauty brand? Apparently, you wear Cushnie like Michelle Obama, Selena Gomez, and Rihanna have done in the past. It’s also what you wear the day before your wedding to Joe Jonas like Sophie Turner did. And if it’s just any regular day of the week, it’s also what you wear to walk outside for some fresh air if you’re Beyonce, Priyanka Chopra, or Jennifer Lopez.
Cushnie, originally Cushnie et Ochs, was founded in 2009 by Michelle Ochs and Carly Cushnie. The brand was a finalist for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award in 2011, and when Michelle Obama wore a Cushnie et Ochs cape dress for the “Christmas in Washington” television special that same year, demand for the brand suddenly skyrocketed.
Now the brand is just run by designer Carly Cushnie out of Bed Stuy and is carried in over 100 stores. Cushnie’s marbled asymmetrical slip dresses and hot pink off-the-shoulder crop tops are red carpet fixtures. The brand is what so many celebrities decide to wear for some of the biggest moments of their life.

That probably has to do with the fact that Cushnie’s specialty is polished, architecture-inspired dresses. When people talk about clothing they want to live in, this is what they mean. A Cushnie dress looks like it melted onto the body, perfectly hugging every inch and curve. And the colors in its collections are often so bright, the only ones that can compare are found in Rihanna’s Fenty beauty products. Of course Rihanna frequently wears Cushnie while promoting Fenty Beauty, with matching lipstick and blush to boot.
