Summer game-changer: This ingenious A/C lets you open the window — and it's on sale!

Updated ·8-min read

It's a supremely annoying summer irony: No sooner does it become a joy to look out the window at nature's green, blooming bounty than we have to disable that window in order to install an air conditioner because....it's summer. Dang-blast it: Why can't we have cool, dry, heavenly A/C and the ability to bask in a sweet, post-thunderstorm fragrance or evening breeze?

Well, now you can, thanks to Midea's U-shaped Inverter Window Air Conditioner. Another best-of-both-worlds factoid? This revolutionary machine is on sale for $40 off, just in time for the dog days.

It's ingenious, really: The folks at Midea (pronounced my-dea — rhymes with idea...presumably because this is such a groundbreaking concept) have fashioned a window unit that is secured (in a lickety-split setup) with a bracket attached to the base of your frame and buttressed by a triangular exterior brace rather than just leaning against the bottom sash of your window. It's a safer, saner way to go and one that allows you to open your window whenever you feel like it. (Oh, and in case you're wondering: Yes, it comes with an anti-theft mechanism for when the window is closed.)

The other benefit of the U-shape? It lets the window act as an auditory shield between you and most of the A/C's machinery. The result? The U-Smart is nine times quieter than conventionally designed A/Cs. (Another summertime irony: In theory, an A/C helps you sleep through the torrid night...except that its motor's roar keeps you up.) Along with that peace comes 35% more energy savings than comparable window units. Impressed yet? And its 8,000 BTUs can cool 350 square feet — enough for the largest living room, even a big-ish studio!

Of course, it comes with a remote, but if you'd like to go "smart," it's also operable via its app and Alexa and Google Assistant.

If somehow you're still not convinced, maybe take a gander at the 8,400-plus five-star reviews it's garnered at Amazon.

This mom is now chill in more ways than one: "First and foremost I know everybody wants to know is it quiet. I have it in my bedroom and I have a child who has sensory sensitivity to sound, so a compressor going off and on is wildly disturbing through the evening. This is whisper-quiet — you never hear the compressor going off or on."

"This new window A/C by Midea now renders ALL other window units OBSOLETE!" said one enthusiastic customer. "Why would anybody spend what this unit cost, probably more, for 1960’s technology?" Yeah, wha the said: Why?

This work-at-homer was also wowed: "Since I've been having to work from home during the 'plague,' my home office has also been getting unbearably hot with all of the computers and monitors I've got running. I'm so impressed with the Midea-U that I just placed an order for another one to put in the office."
