Watch: Milkman, 53, fined after footage shows him kicking hedgehog
A milkman has been ordered to pay more than £600 after being caught on camera kicking a hedgehog across the ground.
David Herring, 53, was captured on a video doorbell chasing the hedgehog by torchlight then appearing to kick it four times, sending it several feet down the pathway.
Herring had claimed that the incident, which happened in Long Melford, Suffolk, on 10 November last year was a one-off because he thought the creature was a rat.
The 53-year-old admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the animal when he appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court on 6 April.
Herring, of Sudbury, Suffolk, was fined £277 and ordered to pay £300 costs and a victim surcharge of £34.
RSPCA inspector Caroline Richardson, who investigated the incident, said the action showed "clear disregard" for the animal.
The hedgehog was being cared for locally, but was not found after it was kicked.
Richardson said: "Having reviewed video footage it was clear the hedgehog was kicked with considerable force.
"The final kick can clearly be heard on the camera footage. The hedgehog rolls at speed several metres, out of sight.
"This was an incident which showed a clear disregard for a wild animal."
