Horrified bystanders can only watch on as a train pulls into the station.

The quick reactions of the train driver ultimately saves the woman's life, as they manage to bring the train to a halt just inches from the woman sprawled across the tracks.

Onlookers quickly jumped down to the woman once the train had stopped to pull her to safety.

The woman, 55, was taken to hospital suffering from shock but only sustained minor injuries.

The driver was also treated for shock, the local transport authority told The Brussels Times.

Police later arrested a 23-year-old male who fled the scene after the incident.

He has since been referred for psychiatric assessment.
