Morrison thanks Tillerson, welcomes Pompeo

Scott Morrison says the government is looking forward to working with the new US Secretary of State

The new US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is well-known to Australia and the government looks forward to working with him, Treasurer Scott Morrison says.

Mr Morrison has thanked Rex Tillerson for his service to the Australian relationship after his sacking by President Donald Trump, saying the decision to replace him with CIA director Mr Pompeo is a matter for the administration.

"The incoming foreign secretary is well known to Australia. The foreign minister only met with him in September of last year. There is an existing relationship there," Mr Morrison told ABC radio on Wednesday.

Labor's defence spokesman Richard Marles is also confident Australia's good working relationship with Mr Tillerson will be recreated with Mr Pompeo.

"I think Rex Tillerson handled his job with an enormous amount of dignity so to that extent obviously it's sad to see him go," Mr Marles told Sky News.
