The conversation with Venâncio Mondlane lasted for more than an hour, Nyusi said in a televised address without providing details of the discussion. He committed to leaving office in January and won’t declare a state of emergency to extend his rule, Nyusi said.

A wave of unprecedented protests have rocked Mozambique since the dispute over the Oct. 9 elections, which Mondlane says he won, but which electoral authorities announced Nyusi’s party and its presidential candidate were victorious, extending the 49-year rule of Frelimo, as the group is known.

The unrest has hit Mozambique’s economy and at least 130 people have died, many shot by live bullets from the police, according to Decide Platform, a local monitoring group. A previous effort from Nyusi to meet Mondlane and other presidential candidates for a dialog over the political tensions failed.
