A cosmetic tourist has died after undergoing plastic surgery in Turkey.

Perla Virginia Baez Garay, 42, fell ill and passed away hours after undergoing several medical procedures at a private clinic in Şişli, Istanbul.

Ms Baez travelled to Turkey from her home in the Spanish capital Madrid to undergo the operations on August 5.

She reportedly suffered acute respiratory distress syndrome at the private hospital where she was being kept for observation.

Ms Baez, who was originally from Paraguay, was taken to the intensive care unit, but passed away shortly afterwards.

The authorities have yet to release the results of an autopsy. Her body was handed over to her family and consulate officials to be sent back to Spain for burial, according to local reports.

The surgeon in question was reportedly arrested for negligent homicide shortly after Ms Baez’s death, but has since been released on bail as the investigation continues.

The victim, who worked as a hairdresser, leaves behind two children aged 12 and eight. Istanbul has become a hotspot for cosmetic and medical tourism in recent years, offering a wide range of services from hair transplants and breast augmentations to IVF procedures. But authorities in Australia are quick to caution on the dangers.
