Mum discovers her son killed the family puppy

A mum, who remains anonymous, has revealed the horrible moment she discovered that her son had killed the family pet.

Posting on Mumsnet, she explains how she found the dog lifeless in the back garden but only after reviewing CCTV did she realise it was because her child had thrown him out of the window.

She says her son, 4, came upstairs after she had discovered what happened and asked for ‘cuddles and kisses’ before he confessed.

Taking to the blog site, the mum says she didn’t think she handled the situation well.

“[He] instantly said it was him in a very quiet voice. I did not deal with his punishment in the correct way. I have probably traumatised him,” she wrote.

“I shouted at him whilst tears were falling from my eyes as I felt for the puppy not him. He looked very sad with bloodshot eyes, no tears.”

Worried that her son’s actions indicated some deeper underlying issues, she asked for advice but the thread had to be deleted by moderators as the debate became too heated.

An article in Psychology Today explains that pre-school children aged up to six don’t quite understand that pets are not toys.

But not every act of violence against an animal is a sign they will turn into a ‘homicidal maniac’.

“Particularly with young children, whose natural exuberance and curiosity can lead to some unpleasant experiences for their pets, it is fine to shrug off an occasional lapse in judgment while continuing to educate the child about humane animal treatment,” the article continued.
