The must-have beach fashion item you should already own

It’s been a strange summer in Australia, with the weather going from one extreme to another with unprecedented speed.

And no matter what you believe about the fact climate change is real, it’s hard to argue that there’s never been a more important time to practice sun safety.

Apart from staying out of the sun, wearing a rash vest or long-sleeved swimsuit is the best way to protect your skin from skin cancer and other health issues.

And while in the past such items were considered daggy or just for children, sun-safe beach fashion has come a long way.

Swimwear and sportswear brands have seriously upped their game when it comes to sun protection and many are producing covetable rashies and long-sleeved bikinis and one-pieces.

We took to Instagram to find stylish swimwear that makes safety look sexy.

Rip Curl

Sun-conscious The Project presenter Carrie Bickmore posted photos of herself wearing this beautiful Rip Curl Saffron Skies UV Surf Suit on a family beach day. What a goddess.

Life Apparel Co

Beach beauty Samantha Harris wears Life Apparel Co, which collaborates with First Nations artists to translate their traditional stories into contemporary fashion collections.

May Gibbs x Romance Was Born

An uber-cool collab made in print heaven, with the iconic May Gibbs brand pairing up with modern favourites Romance Was Born. The stunning limited-edition Rainbow Gumnut Rashie is sure to be an Australian fashion collector’s item.

P.E. Nation x Speedo

Another amazing collab, this time between Australian swimwear dynasty Speedo and activewear juggernaut P.E. Nation. Here, model Sophia Brennan wears the Fynne Paddlesuit over the Black Fin Bikini Set for The Iconic.

Une Piece

All swimwear by Australian newcomer Une Piece is made from sustainable UP50+ fabric. This sexy capped-sleeve one-piece is fulfilling all our leopard dreams and is also available with long sleeves.

Nordic Drifter

Another Australian label flying the sustainability flag is Nordic Drifter. Their vintage-inspired swimwear is “made from nylon waste, plastic bottles and discarded fishnets” that can be “recycled, regenerated and remoulded”. We love this simple, classy Stockholm Crop rashie.

The Upside

When it comes to swimwear, Jodhi Meares knows what’s what. We’re so happy her activewear brand, The Upside, has expanded to include amazing sun-conscious beachwear such as the Maya Shells Paddlesuit.

Obus

Cult Melbourne brand Obus does everything with thought for others and the environment, and their swimwear is no different. All pieces are made from sustainable fabric comprising recycled post-consumer material which is good for your skin and the world. This vibrant Jubilee Rashie makes us smile every time we see it.

Seafolly

Ok, so sun-smart points are deducted for the exposed décolletage, but how beautiful is this Active Long-Sleeve Surfsuit from Australian swimwear royalty Seafolly? Just make sure you load up with UP50+ sunscreen to protect your chest.

Ganni

If a brand can be an influencer, Ganni is the Margaret Zhang of brands. Lucky for us, they’ve launched swimwear and it’s fierce AF. This Tiger Print Cropped Rash Vest is speaking to my soul right now.
