Neighbours is set to film special scenes at Sydney's upcoming Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras as the show is getting a special float at the event.

The show's producers Fremantle announced the exciting news, revealing that it will form part of an upcoming storyline for the soap.

"Cast and crew will be marching to celebrate equality and inclusiveness, and to thank the LGBTQI community we take great pride in representing in Australia’s longest running drama," they explained.

Neighbours has broken a lot of ground for LGBTQ+ representation, becoming the first Australian TV drama to show a same-sex wedding as Aaron (Matt Wilson) and David (Takaya Honda) tied the knot.

The soap's float is set to celebrate Aaron and David's marriage, as well as the community that embraces their union.

The show's stars took to Instagram to rave about the news, Matt saying that it was "a very, very proud moment for us as it celebrates everything we stand for".

Takaya added: "I am beyond excited and honoured to be a part of this moment that will celebrate #equality #love#inclusivity #representation and #diversity."

"Everyone is welcome on Ramsay Street," said Neighbours executive producer Jason Herbison. "We can't wait to stand among our brothers and sisters at Mardi Gras and share our commitment to equality.

"Television is powerful and we'll also be filming a storyline around the parade. Love is love and it's here to stay on Neighbours."

The 2019 Mardi Gras 'Fearless' Festival will run between February 15 and March 3, and the Parade takes place March 2.
