Nicole Kidman says being a producer allows her to 'control my destiny' as The Perfect Couple hits the small screen

The Perfect Couple is the latest murder mystery to grace our screens and boasts a star-studded cast including Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, Eve Hewson and Meghann Fahy.

Kidman says becoming a producer has allowed her to have more control over her own career and help pave the way for others in the industry.

The Australian actress founded Blossom Films in 2010 along with her producing partner Per Saari with the intention to focus on a select number of projects in order to give them their full attention.

Their latest project, The Perfect Couple, is a star-studded murder mystery based on a wealthy family and their son's upcoming nuptials.

"It's really so nice to be at this stage of my life where I get to have some control over my destiny," she told Sky News at the Netflix show's UK premiere.

"That's part of what I love about producing, is I can also help other people when they can come to me [sic.] and I know what to fight for."

Kidman says despite being a small company, they deliver big projects by "getting our hands really in the dirt".

It has been a busy time for the Australian actress.

The premiere of her new show comes just days after she was the recipient of a six-and-a-half minute standing ovation for her film Babygirl with Harris Dickinson at Venice Film Festival.

"To be invited to Venice, that was enough. We were so grateful to be invited and I hadn't been there for 20 years."

She adds: "We didn't know how it was going to be received because it's a pretty risky movie and it was just lovely. It was also exciting and energising and revitalising in a weird way."

'An out-of-body experience'

The Perfect Couple follows Amelia Sachs, played by Irish actress Eve Hewson, who is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families in Nantucket.

All is seemingly going to plan until a body shows up on the beach, spiralling a flower-filled ceremony into a murder mystery.

A nice surprise for Hewson, who is the daughter of U2 frontman Bono, was finding out Kidman would be playing her difficult mother-in-law.

"I had no idea that Nicole was even a part of the show when I signed on so it was such a huge, amazing surprise. I'm obsessed with her, she's an icon. And working with her was like, was I acting or was I just sort of like having an out-of-body experience?"

Meanwhile, Schreiber, who starred in the TV series Ray Donovan, says the production of The Perfect Couple was a rare experience filled with actors who truly appreciated and respected each other.

"You never know if you're going to get that, if you're going to get people who work with each other for each other and we had a group of people who were doing that. They knew what the other person was doing, and they're making space for them, which was when you get that, it usually get something good."

The Perfect Couple is available to stream on Netflix now.
