Outrage after Caitlyn Jenner's reported arrival in Sydney for Big Brother

Keeping Up With The Kardashians star Caitlyn Jenner has reportedly touched down in Australia to take part in yet another reality TV gig — and people are not happy about it.

According to The Advertiser, the 71-year-old former Olympian arrived in Sydney earlier this week ahead of her stint in the Celebrity Big Brother house.

Caitlyn causing outrage

Caitlyn, who is currently running for governor of California, is thought to have begun two weeks of quarantine but whether that's in a hotel or a private residence is not known.

While Channel 7 has yet to confirm Caitlyn as a Celebrity Big Brother housemate, she's rumoured to be pocketing a cool $500,000 for just a week of filming.

Caitlyn's visit down under has sparked outrage among Aussies, with many questioning how a celebrity was able to enter the country while tens of thousands of citizens and permanent residents remain stranded overseas.

One of those is the wife of Sam Clench, a US correspondent for news.com.au who took to Twitter to share his anger about Ms. Jenner's arrival.

"My wife's flight home to Australia was cancelled today due to the arrival caps but nice to see Caitlyn Jenner (who's supposedly running for governor of California) managed to get into Sydney to appear on Big Brother," he wrote on Saturday morning.

Fellow Twitter users deemed the news 'beyond infuriating' and 'extremely unfair'.

"My sister, husband (both fully vaccinated) and their baby have been trying for months to get a flight back. Shame they’re not celebrities where the rules clearly don’t apply," wrote one.

"Many people are flying in and out you just have to have money and know the right people. Extremely unfair," added another.

"Beyond infuriating. What happened to the big brouhaha about tightening up on "exceptions" for travel for people like this! Gone with the wind?" asked a third.

'Slap in the face'

At the end of June, the ABC reported that there were 'about 34,000 people who remain registered with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) who are overseas and want to return home to Australia'.

In mid-July, the so-called 'passenger cap' — the maximum number of international arrivals coming into Australia via commercial flights — was halved to just 3,000 a week.

However, it is not clear whether Caitlyn took the place of an Australian awaiting repatriation as famous and high profile travellers have been known to foot the bill for private quarantine.

A spokesman for the Stranded Aussies Action Network told news.com.au that while the star's Aussie visit was a 'slap in the face' it wasn't necessarily Caitlyn and her celebrity peers that are to blame.

"[Jenner's arrival] is clearly a slap in the face for stranded Aussies.

"But it's not the celebrities that are to blame, it's the failed government policies that allows this to happen."

Caitlyn for California

It's not just Aussie that have been riled. The California resident is just two months away from making her dream of becoming the state's governor a reality, and the timing of her trip has shocked both sides of the political fence.

Caitlyn appeared to address the backlash following her departure on Twitter, saying that her gubernatorial campaign was very much still in progress.

"I am honoring a work commitment that I had made prior to even deciding to run for governor. There is no pause at all on this race to save CA!" read one tweet.

"I have not paused my campaign at all. I am preparing to launch a multi-week bus tour across CA," reiterated another.

Meanwhile, fellow US star Neil Patrick Harris is reportedly set to head into the Celebrity Big Brother house along with Married At First Sight bride Jessica Power, according to Nova's Fitzy & Wippa.

How I Met Your Mother star Neil was initially brought down under to appear as a judge on Australia's Got Talent until it was cancelled due to Sydney's Covid lockdown.
