PEOPLE staffers lathered up, slathered on and smoothed our strands with 81 hair products and tools to pick these 19 winners
Whether you've got fine hair or frizzy curls, whether you suffer from scalp buildup or unflattenable flyaways, we found the perfect hair product to address any issue. After testing 81 products across all categories, we narrowed it down to our 19 favorite hair care systems (a.k.a. shampoo and conditioner), creams and tools to give you the tresses of your dreams — all of which makes them official PEOPLE Beauty Award winners of 2023.
Best Scalp Scrub: Kérastase Symbiose Scalp Renewal Scrub
“It made me excited to wash my hair,” said one tester of this gentle scrub, which gets rid of dandruff, oil and product buildup and leaves your scalp feeling “refreshed."
Best Dandruff Shampoo: Head & Shoulders Bare Pure Clean
Testers reported an “incredible difference” after using this anti-dandruff shampoo. “My scalp felt so clean that I was able to go longer between washes,” said one.
Best System for Color-Treated Hair: OGX Vibrant Color Vibes Shampoo
The shampoo earned points for its creamy lather (with a scent one tester described as making "you feel like you're in a really nice hotel"), while the conditioner was a hit for adding softness and shine.
Best System for Curls and Coils: Carol's Daughter Born to Repair Nourishing Shampoo
Best Leave-In for Curls and Coils: Dove Love Those Bold Curls Leave-In Cream
Even if this find didn’t do such a stellar job at detangling and softening, our testers said they’d use it for the delicious coconut scent alone.
Best System for Damaged Hair: John Frieda Frizz Ease Replenish & Repair Shampoo
Best Splurge System for Damaged Hair: Paul Mitchell BondRx Shampoo
Best Treatment: LolaVie Intensive Repair Treatment
Leave it to the queen of great hair, Jennifer Aniston, to launch a product that makes fried strands look fabulous. The secret: chia seeds and superfruit extracts
Best Repairing Oil: K18 Molecular Repair Oil
This silicone-free formula was “hair-changing” for our testers with stressed-out, weakened strands thanks to strengthening peptides, plus frizz-combating oils.
Best System for Fine Hair: Ceremonia Weightless Hydration Shampoo for Fine/Thin Hair
Best Splurge System for Frizz: IGK Good Behavior Shampoo
Best Styling Cream: Fekkai Clean Stylers Glossing Cream+
Some testers applied this velvety, versatile formula before blow-drying, while others used it to tame flyaways and frayed ends. Either way, it’s a winner.
Best Hair Oil: Odele Hair Oil
It’s hard to find an oil that gives all the shine and smoothness without adding any weight or greasy residue, but this one (housed in a luxelooking glass bottle) nailed it—and at a budget-friendly price.
Best Frizz Fighter: Living Proof Smooth Styling Spray
Created for fine hair, this mist adds “tons of body to a blowout” while also providing “top-notch” frizz protection, according to our testers.
Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Overnight Dry Shampoo
Not only does this mist absorb oils while you snooze — according to one tester, “it provides excellent texture and volume the next day.”
Best Hairspray: L'Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hairspray
One tester reported this unscented spray kept her hair in place during her morning commute, which includes two trains and a ferry.
Best Detangling Brush: Wet Brush Go Green Paddle Detangler
Thanks to its generous surface area, this brush tackles every last knot and it’s super cute to boot.
Best Flat Iron: T3 SinglePass StyleMax Flat Iron
Our testers agreed that this hot tool is “worth the spend” since it heats up fast, glides down hair without pulling and lives up to its name. (Our PEOPLE Tested team also loved the brand's Smooth ID iron.)
Drybar The Smooth Shot
This paddle-style design (which is surprisingly light) is the only one that had testers reporting salon-like results: “It straightens and creates volume without damaging my hair.”
