Person Who Found Man Dead in a Tent Thought He Was Killed in Bear Attack. It Was Actually a Brutal Murder
The victim was 35-year-old Dustin Kjersem. A suspect has not yet been identified
A Montana man was found dead in a tent by a person who believed it was the result of a bear attack. But when investigators arrived, they discovered that the man had been the victim of a homicide.
The body Dustin Kjersem, 35, was found north of Big Sky, Mont., on Saturday, Oct. 12, the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office said.
The person who found Kjersem said it could have been caused by a bear attack. But a state Fish, Wildlife and Parks agent did not find any evidence of bear activity in the area, the sheriff’s office said.
Police began investigating the incident as a homicide and found evidence that supported that classification, according to the sheriff.
The sheriff’s office called it a “vicious attack.” No one has been arrested in connection with the homicide.
“This is a homicide and we are working all hours of day and night to find his killer,” Sheriff Dan Springer said, according to Explore Big Sky. “He was brutally killed at his campsite and we need your help.”

Springer reportedly said that Kjersem had plans to meet with a friend the day before his body was found, but failed to show up.
Explore Big Sky further reported that an autopsy found that Kjersem had suffered multiple chop wounds, though police have not yet identified a murder weapon.
