Peter Marshall, original host of ‘Hollywood Squares,’ dies at 98

NEW YORK — Peter Marshall, a stage and screen star best known for hosting the original version of the “Hollywood Squares” game show from 1966 until 1981, died Thursday at his Southern California home, his family announced. He was 98.

Marshall, who won four Daytime Emmy Awards for his work on the celebrity-filled, tic-tac-toe-style show on NBC, was also an accomplished theater performer.

His credits include “La Cage aux Folles” and “The Music Man” on Broadway, and “Bye Bye Birdie” on London’s West End, alongside Chita Rivera.

Marshall died of kidney failure at his home in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to his wife of 35 years, Laurie Marshall.
