In pictures: The Ministry of Defence's best images from around the world in 2019

The Ministry of Defence has released its best pictures of 2019 which include an armoured vehicle pushing through flames, a boy saluting Red Arrow pilots and a helicopter picking up a Royal Marine at sea.

The brilliant images were taken by military and civilian photographers from across the world.

They capture warzones, military parades and exercises and other memorable moments.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said: “Our Armed Forces have been at the heart of some of our country’s biggest achievements in 2019.

“To capture their work we have deployed photographers around the globe to give the general public a unique glimpse of life in our Armed Forces.

“Defence photographers are some of the most valued and highly trained members of our Armed Forces and I thank them for their service.”

The Defence Imagery Editor Panay Triantafillides added: “2019 has been a fantastic year for our Armed Forces and these images showcase the realities of military life and the unique talents of our photographers from across the Royal Navy, Army, RAF and MOD.”

More than 11,000 sailors, soldiers, airmen and marines will be working over the festive period, involved in 35 operations in more than 30 countries ranging from Iraq to Estonia.

In total 14 Naval vessels will be at sea from Type 45 Destroyer HMS Defender and Type 23 Frigate HMS Montrose in the Gulf to survey ship HMS Enterprise in the Pacific.
