Prince Harry Teased Meghan Markle During the Invictus Games Opening Ceremony
All in good fun.
Prince Harry is poking a little fun at his wife, Meghan Markle, and her "competitive" nature. While speaking at the opening ceremony at the 2023 Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany, Harry gave his family a funny shoutout while talking about the new countries, Israel and Nigeria, that have joined the games.
The prince joked that ever since discovering that she is partly of Nigerian descent, Meghan has gotten "a little more competitive" at home. "Now, I'm not saying we play favorites in our home, but since my wife discovered she's of Nigerian descent, it's likely to get a little bit more competitive this year," he teased, per Entertainment Tonight.
Markle was not in attendance at the opening to defend herself, but it was previously reported that the duchess will be delivering a "very emotional" closing speech during the farewell ceremony, according to German newspaper Rheinische Post (per the Daily Mail). This will mark the couple's first official public appearance since their “near catastrophic car chase" with paparazzi in May, though the two were spotted dancing together in matching silver looks at Beyoncé's Los Angeles Renaissance show.
The Invictus Games kicked off on Saturday and will run through Sept. 16. The adaptive sports games were created by Harry in 2014 to give wounded veterans a sense of community. Elsewhere in his speech, Harry encouraged the athletes respect each other and themselves. "These game are not solely about medals, PBs or finishing lines," he said. "They are about overcoming any and all perceptions that have held you back, especially those you've placed on yourselves."
