Prince Harry's royal move that blew Prince Charles 'out of the water'

Prince Harry and Prince Charles’ relationship was blown open during the Duke of Sussex’s now famous interview with Oprah Winfrey, where he revealed he felt ‘let down’ by his father, but it seems tensions between the pair began a long time before that.

According to The Sun, royal journalist Robert Jobson speaks about a move Prince Harry made that shocked Prince Charles in the controversial BBC’s documentary The Princes and the Press.

He revealed he was away covering Prince Charles’ royal visit to the Middle East when Prince Harry blew him “completely out [of] the water” by releasing a statement regarding the press intrusion and harassment of his then girlfriend, Meghan Markle.

“When you’re on a trip, say with the Prince of Wales in the Middle East, and all of your negotiations for a week to get the chat with the Prince of Wales, to say, ‘We guarantee you the splash,’ all goes out the window because Harry releases this big statement about the press and about their treatment of Meghan was outrageous,” he said.

On November 8th 2016, the royal family’s official website released the statement, where Prince Harry claimed the treatment of Meghan had “seen a line crossed”.

“Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm,” he said.

Just one year later, on November 27th 2017, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they were engaged, with the pair tying the knot on May 19th 2018 at Windsor Castle.

However, they didn’t exactly get their fairytale royal ending and by January 2020, they announced they were leaving their roles as senior royals to move to the US.

In March 2021, Prince Harry opened up to Oprah Winfrey about the couple’s departure from royal life, saying his father, Charles, stopped answering his calls after he and wife Meghan Markle distanced themselves from the royal family.

"It was like, I need to do this for my family. This is not a surprise to anybody,” he said.

"It's really sad that it's got to this point, but I've got to do something for my own mental health, my wife's."

When asked about his relationship with his father, Prince Harry hesitated before saying there was a lot to work through.

"I feel really let down because he has been through something similar," he said.

"He knows what pain feels like and Archie is his grandson ... but I will always love him."

Among the most jaw-dropping claims during the interview were that the duo was financially 'cut off' by the royal family after Megxit, that while Meghan was pregnant one royal expressed concerns over 'how dark' Archie's skin would be, and that the pressures and control she felt under while a working royal lead Meghan to a place where she 'didn't want to live'.

After the interview, it was reported that Prince Charles was ‘in a state of despair’ over the allegations.

“Harry was emailing his father to justify why he and Meghan had done the interview,” royal insider Katie Nicholl wrote in a column for Vanity Fair.

“Charles was said to be ‘in a state of despair’ according to a friend.”
