Pro-Russian social media accounts try to sour relations between Trump and Ukraine

Russia is trying to make America doubt its support for Ukraine by spreading false information.

A fake post, supposedly from Elon Musk, and a fake video of Ukrainian soldiers burning an effigy of Trump: since Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, pro-Russian accounts have been flooding social media. They aim to create discord between the US president-elect and Ukrainians.

Since Donald Trump’s reelection on November 5, 2024, many pro-Russian social media accounts have been spreading false information in hopes of eroding American support for Kyiv. Many of these posts have portrayed Ukraine and its armed forces as anti-Trump. Here is a look at the main pieces of fake news circulating.

  • Did Musk really send Zelensky a dollar bill and a middle finger ?

Several posts shared on November 6, 2024 claimed that billionaire and Trump supporter Elon Musk sent his “last symbolic dollar” to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky. The posts, which gathered more than 200,000 views, echoed speculations of Trump cutting off aid to Ukraine.

They share what they claim to be a post by the billionaire, featuring an image of a US dollar bill with a portrait of Donald Trump giving the middle finger. "The last dollar for Zelensky," Musk supposedly wrote in his post.

In reality, the post attributed to Musk is fake – the billionaire never shared such a message. A search of Musk’s X account using the keywords "last dollar" yields no results, and the profile picture in the fake post differs from the one on his actual account.
