Wet weather has delayed the start of the Hobart International final between defending champion Elise Mertens and Romania's Mihaela Buzarnescu.

The match was due to begin at midday (AEDT) but rain arrived as the players were being announced - further showers are forecast throughout the afternoon.

Mertens could become the first player in the tournament's history to win the singles title twice, while Buzarnescu is appearing in her maiden WTA final at age 29.
