Ratings Report: Which Shows Are Having the Strongest Fall So Far?
Now that we’re about a month into this admittedly strange Fall TV season, the latest Live+7 ratings report shows that a few broadcast programs are putting in unarguably strong showings.
In total viewers, NBC’s The Voice is the most-watched entertainment program of the fall thus far, averaging nearly 8 million viewers with its Monday and Tuesday telecasts (with Live+7 playback factored in).

CBS’ Survivor places a solid second in total audience, followed the NBC freshman The Irrational, ABC’s taken-back-from-Disney+ Dancing With the Stars, and NBC’s other scripted noobie, Found.

Taking a look now at who is benefiting the most from delayed playback — we thus far have data for anywhere from two to three episodes — the audience for CBS’ The Amazing Race is enjoying the largest percentage gain, followed closely by NBC’s The Irrational, CBS’ The Challenge: USA and Fox’s Special Forces: Worlds Toughest Test. (As is typical, the big gainers here are mostly 10 pm shows, because people like me like to get to sleep and catch up another day. That reminds me, I still have the last 30 minutes of Found to watch…)
TOP 5 DELAYED-PLAYBACK GAINERS: TOTAL AUDIENCE (%)
+63% The Amazing Race (CBS) — 4.55 million viewers
+62% The Irrational (NBC) — 6.33 million viewers
+61% The Challenge: USA (CBS) — 2.33 million viewers
+61% Special Forces: WTT (Fox) — 2.25 million viewers
+57% Found (NBC) — 5.54 million viewers
+57% The Swarm (The CW, acquired) — 571,000 viewers
Fun fact: Fox’s already-renewed Krapopilis is seeing the tiniest gain of all entertainment programs, growing its audience just 6% with delayed viewing.
The networks want us to believe that another way to look at delayed-playback gains is the actual number of viewers added. Here, The Irrational tops all entertainment programs, followed closely by fellow freshman Found:
TOP 5 DELAYED-PLAYBACK GAINERS: TOTAL AUDIENCE (ACTUAL)
+2.42 mil The Irrational (NBC)
+2 mil Found (NBC)
+1.8 mil The Amazing Race (CBS)
+1.7 mil Survivor (CBS)
+1.6 mil Magnum P.I. — 5.1 million viewers
In other words, NBC’s The Irrational (undoubtedly benefiting some from its Voice lead-in) is performing very well so far. What’s more, in the coveted 18-49 demo, the Jesse L. Martin starrer ranks No. 4 in delayed-playback gains (rising 56% to a 0.50 rating), trailing only The Challenge: USA (+100%), Found (+59%) and NBC’s Quantum Leap (+57%).
Who all is leading the broadcast pack in the increasingly bifurcated 18-49 demo, now featuring two decimal places? Here, one more chart!
TOP 5 ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAMS IN 18-49 DEMO*
1.11 rating Survivor (CBS)
0.80 rating The Simpsons (Fox)
0.76 rating The Voice (NBC, Mon/Tue avg.)
