Get ready for Martin Scorsese to see your film reviews on Letterboxd
Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese whose latest film Killers of the Flower Moon is now in theaters, has officially joined Letterboxd, the social media platform where users can log and review movies they've seen (as well as list movies they still want to see, and a variety of other functions). That means one of the world's most enthusiastic fans of cinema (whose Film Foundation restores old films from around the world, and who never hesitates to recommend a movie he loves) is now on there with the rest of us.
"Find me on @letterboxd," Scorsese posted on his official Instagram account, beside a photo of himself on his iPad.

Scorsese has never been shy about sharing his love for particular movies. In a multitude of interviews he's given over the years, as well as documentaries like A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies, he's always quick to recommend both contemporary films and old Hollywood classics.
Letterboxd's list function, which allows users to collect movies on any conceivable topic, therefore seems practically made for his encyclopedic brain. Scorsese has already published two lists: One is a collection of films that have been restored by his Film Foundation, while the other is titled Companion Films. It's a list of old movies that influenced or are otherwise parallel to Scorsese's own works.
"I love the idea of putting different films together into one program," Scorsese writes in the list's description. "I grew up seeing double features, programs in repertory houses, evenings of avant-garde films in storefront theaters. You always learn something, see something in a new light, because every movie is in conversation with every other movie. The greater the difference between the pictures, the better."
He continues, "Over the years, I've been asked to pair my own pictures with older films by other people that have inspired them. The request has come from film festivals, which present the pairings as a program. The terms 'inspiration' and 'influence' aren't completely accurate. I think of them as companion films. Sometimes the relationship is based on inspiration. Sometimes it's the relationships between the characters. Sometimes it's the spirit of the picture. Sometimes it's far more mysterious than that."
For example, Scorsese lists The Heiress, The Last of the Line, Blood on the Moon, Red River, and Wild River as companion pieces to Killers of the Flower Moon. Not sure where to watch them? Well, one of Letterboxd's functions is connecting users with sites where movies can be streamed.
Every 10 years, the British Film Institute conducts polls of both fans and critics to rank the best films of all time. The most recent one, published last December, had Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles at the top of the critics' list while 2001: A Space Odyssey topped the directors' list. Scorsese submitted a list to this poll, but couldn't limit himself to the typical 10.
Now he can list as many movies as he wants, and we can all read them.
