The real reason Kate always carries a clutch

This nifty little trick is such a good idea we might have to start using it ourselves.

It’s no surprise Kate Middleton loves matching a good clutch to her immaculate outfits more often than not.

And it turns out there is an actual reason as to why.

Royal etiquette expert Myka Meier says the Duchess of Cambridge carries a clutch as a way to prevent any unwanted handshakes.

"When the Duchess is at an event, she holds her bag in front of her in both hands when shaking hands might be awkward,” Myka told Good Housekeeping US.

Then if she wants to shake hands, rather than tucking the clutch under her arm and out of the way, she places it in one hand to have the other one momentarily free, says Myka.

We would have never thought about it that way, but it’s a great trick none-the-less. Just as clever as Princess Diana’s 'cleavage' clutch trick - must run in the family.

Another etiquette consultant also agreed saying the Duchess might prefer not to shake hands with certain people.

“But there are other ways to achieve this, as used by The Queen and other members of the royal family, than opting for a clutch over a bag with a strap,” William Hanson told the Mail Online.

Sometimes a simple smile will do.

"A courteous smile at those whom she does not have time to shake hands with will suffice,” he says.
