Rebel Wilson interview slammed for 'fat-shaming': 'Misinformation'

Staffers at People magazine are reportedly "appalled" at Rebel Wilson's recent cover story, claiming their editor didn't listen to their concerns that the story is "fat-shaming" and spreading "misinformation" around fertility and weight.

In the interview, Rebel shares how it was a trip to a fertility doctor in 2019 that inspired her 'Year of Health' in 2020, where she lost around 35kg.

The actress shared that when she was 39, she visited a doctor who said she'd have more success freezing her eggs if she lost weight.

"He looked me up and down and said, 'You’d do much better if you were healthier,'" she told the publication, adding that she felt healthy at the time, but the "rude" comment sank in after the initial shock.

"He was right. I was carrying around a lot of excess weight. It’s almost like I didn’t think of my own needs. I thought of a future child’s needs that really inspired me to get healthier," she said.

Staffers at People magazine reportedly accused new editor Liz Vaccariello of taking a "fluffy approach" to weight loss and fertility, adding that she should have had medical insight to back up the claims, The Post reports.

"Several people expressed discomfort with various angles of the Rebel story in multiple meetings," a source told The Post. “It was like Liz just didn’t want to hear it or didn’t care. It isn’t that there’s no validity to the idea that weight can impact fertility. But the way we presented it is not right.”

However, a representative for People told the publication, "These claims are complete fabrications. This did not happen."

The insider, however, added, "Basically we’ve just put it out there that a man declared Rebel too fat to have babies and she decided he was right. Full stop."

They added, "It’s fat-shaming and misinformation and completely unbalanced with any sort of expert medical discussion."

Rebel's followers loved the interview, however, with many taking to Instagram to share their support for the star.

"Love all of this!" one follower wrote. "So inspirational. Such a badASS babe!"

"Beautiful at any size," another added.

"Love her no matter what size clothes she wears, I’m happy for her for finding the lifestyle choices that work best for her," a third said.

"You look phenomenal! I'm the same and finding inspiration in you," someone else wrote.

It comes after Rebel recently confirmed she was in a new relationship after admitting she dated about 50 people during her "Year of Love" in 2019.

"I went on some dates with some billionaires and then also some people who had nothing. It was the full spectrum of people," she told the U Up? podcast.

She added she was 39 at the time and had only been in a few short relationships.

While Rebel remains tight-lipped about the identity of her new love interest, many have speculated she had been dating tennis star, Matt Reid.

They have been spotted together on a number of occasions, including on the AACTA Awards red carpet and at the US Open.

In December, almost a year after splitting with boyfriend Jacob Busch, the Herald Sun reported that whispers in the tennis world suggested the pair "could be more than just friends".
